Healthy Homemade Tomato Sauce-The Perfect Base for Meals

Hey Everyone,

This year I lost almost 9kg through nutrition and exercise and I’ve picked up so many tips and advice along the way which I want to share with you. The most important thing I have learned is that it doesn’t matter how often you work out, if your diet is bad then you will never loose weight. Nutrition is key to success in weightloss!

The biggest thing I have learned about nutrition is the importance of cooking your meals from scratch. That means not using any tinned foods or jars of sauce in my cooking. I learned that they are laced in hidden sugars, fats and preservatives that are not good for weightloss or nutrition. Once I cut these things from my diet I not only felt much healthier and energetic but I also started to see the weight on the scales dropping.

I plan on bringing you healthy recipes and sharing tips with you so that you do can benefit from the things I have learned.  Today I’m bringing you a healthy recipe for sauce which I use as part of a lot of my meals.

Homemade tomato sauce is so simple and easy to make. The best part about is that it’s free from extra sugars, salt and preservatives that are often in tinned tomatoes.  It’s much healthier to make your own and it tastes so delicious! Much nicer than anything from a tin.

This sauce is delicious to use as the main base for chili con carne, bolognese sauce and even some curries. There’s so many healthy dishes you can make using this sauce which I will share in coming weeks.

  1. 6-10 tomatoes roughly diced
  2. 2/3 cloves of chopped garlic
  3. 1tbsp of basil
  4. Salt and black pepper
Place all ingredients into a casserole dish and place in the over at 180 degrees for one hour.
Check and stir halfway through

Once the mixture is nice and soft place into a blender and add a little water until it’s a thick sauce consistency.
Top tips:
  • Freeze the sauce in lunch boxes to save time and money. It’s perfect to have it stocked in your freezer on busy days.
  • I buy a whole bag of tomatoes at fruit and veg markets to cut down on cost. Aldi often have special offers on tomatoes so it’s worth stocking up if you get a good deal.
  • This can also be eaten as a tomato soup if enough water is added. Add paprika and chili flakes to spice it up!

I totally agree with you when you said that diet is key to weight loss. I will another key element to bear in mind when trying to lose weight: discipline. I’ve recently had a baby, and for the past month or so I have been working on losing 4kg to go back to my pre-pregnancy weight. This has proven so difficult as I struggle to be firm with myself. I have already three relapses in two months! Thanks for sharing this with us

100% agree! You really do need discipline. I find planning and prepping meals in advance really help me to stay on track. I also think it’s important to set clear goals and deadlines too. Thanks you so much for commenting. I love hearing from people x

Bang on girl! Planning ahead definitely makes the whole healthy journey easier. I have been doing so in my head, and so far it’s been inefficient (not surprised there really). How do you plan and prep your meals? Do you have a book just for that or you put a list on your fridge? I’d very much welcome your ideas as I need to go back in line to achieve my goal (lose the 4kg by November). Your entry was of interest to me, so it’s a pleasure to discuss/comment on it.

I could probably write a whole post on it 😂 maybe I’ll do one next week. I stick to a strict plan during the week and have a treat at the weekend. That way I’ve a set day/time to have something off plan, something to look forward to. Then on Saturday I write down what I’m going to eat each meal, write a shopping list and stick to it. I meal prep on Sunday, preparing things that take a long time such as this sauce which I can freeze and use when I need it. I write everything out on a little calendar so I can tick it off and mark out goals 😊 x

Is it okay to put the tomatoes into a microwave instead of an oven? I like the part where you mentioned healthy diet + exercise. It’s what goes inside us that determines our weight-loss success or failure most of the time.
