How To Add Flavour To Your Food The Clean & Healthy Way

Food intolerance can be a pain in the backside and when I first discovered my dairy and gluten intolerance I didn’t know what I was going to cook. It took me a long time to find foods and recipes that were good for me and also tasted delicious but I found them. Today I’m going to share with you the basics of cooking healthy, clean meals that will suit anyone with a gluten and dairy intolerance. This will also suit anyone who wants to lose weight or eat clean.

I’ll admit that I’ve fallen off the wagon and eaten foods that don’t agree with me and being honest, I felt crap! I’m only human! Last week I decided to get back on the wagon and I’m back to eating the food that agrees with me and I feel so much better.

Cooking from Scratch

Nutritionists, personal trainers and even famous weightloss diets such as Slimming World and Body Trim all promote ditching the ready meals and jars of sauce for cooking from scratch. This is because of the health benefits. We don’t need the preservatives and additives in our diet. So why not ditch them?!

Cooking from scratch doesn’t need to be hard or time consuming. I cook a lot of my food and even sauces in the oven now and there is literally no effort involved in that. Preparation is key and once the food is in the oven it will only be a matter of checking it every so often.

Now that I cook most of my meals from scratch I feel much less bloated and I enjoy my meals a lot more. Who doesn’t enjoy a guilt free meal? Not only do I not feel guilty but my food tastes so much better. I can now tell the difference between a jar of sauce and a homemade sauce and I prefer the homemade sauce every time.

Herbs & Spices

Herbs and spices are the elements that add flavour to your food. Your spice rack will be your new friend in the kitchen. All of the herbs and spices you see on your spice rack are included in your jars of sauce and packet mixes. The difference is they also include tonnes of preservatives, extra salt and extra sugar that just isn’t needed in your diet.

If you want to start eating clean or you want to lose weight then I recommend buying a spice rack. Once you buy your spice rack you’ll probably be wondering what to do with it! I know I did! Lucky enough I go to a gym that sent me this picture. It’s made life so much easier for me. Knowing what herbs and spices go together to create a healthy meal will help you to really enjoy the meals you create.

In the picture below is 9 herb and spice blends for different cuisine. They’re very basic and easy to make and I’ve found it really useful.

I really hope that these herb mixes help you just as much as they’ve helped me. I use these herb mixes to marinade my meat or add flavour to sauces.

My favourite healthy sauce is my homemade tomato sauce as it can be used as a base for a lo of different meals including bolognese, chilli or even some curries. It takes little or no effot to make it too. Be sure to check it out along with all my other healthy recipes.

Great article. I also have a gluten intolerance and still find it hard to eat the good stuff! Your body sure does let you know when you haven’t.
